Look at ceiling paint in the room closest to the kitchen exhaust path, usually a bathroom, closet, or hallway ceiling, for yellowish staining, bubbling, or a slightly greasy sheen. Run your hand over it. Grease-affected drywall often feels faintly tacky even when it looks dry.

Check for a smell that's different from cooking odor, more like a musty or sour note underneath the food smell. Cooking smells fade fast. Mold smell lingers and tends to be strongest first thing in the morning before the building has aired out.

Mold behind drywall doesn't always show itself the way it does on a bathroom tile grout line. It can be growing along a joist or inside insulation for a long time before it reaches the painted surface, and by the time you can smell it clearly from inside your unit, it has usually had a head start.

A mold inspection in this situation isn't just about confirming mold exists. It's about tracing the moisture path, which in a mixed-use building usually means figuring out whether the source is the kitchen exhaust duct, a shared wall cavity, condensation from the marine layer, or some combination. That tracing work often needs a thermal camera, humidity meters, and sometimes a small inspection cut in drywall, none of which tells you much if done casually.

If you do call someone in, it helps to have already noted when the smell or staining is strongest, whether it tracks with dinner service hours, and whether it has gotten worse since a particular season.
